At Aretta, we believe speed comes from mastery, not haste. We invest deeply in each other through mentorship, honest and kind feedback, and a commitment to getting better every day. That foundation lets us work in flow: calm on the surface, moving fast underneath. From there, we take big, courageous bets aimed at changing the world, not making small improvements, because we know the team stands behind every swing. When a bet works, we all win. When it doesn't, we all learn. And we do it as whole humans, with lives, families and passions outside of work, because people who are cared for do the best work of their lives.*

Our values are not a checklist of ideals, but rather a holistic view of work and life. Each one makes the next possible. When people feel cared for, they feel safe enough to invest in getting genuinely good at what they do. Mastery lets them work in flow, and flow is where both speed and the courage to take big swings come from. Big swings, whether they land or not, teach the whole team something, and that learning feeds back into mastery. Business results are what this produces. We don't chase them directly; they follow from a team that is dedicated to the craft.

1. Mastery, then flow

Most startups equate speed with urgency: work harder, ship faster, fix it later. We think that gets it backwards. Real speed comes from mastery. When you deeply understand a problem and the system around it, you stop stumbling, you stop redoing work, and you move quickly without having to rush.

That is the kind of team we want to be: calm and confident on the surface, moving fast underneath because everyone has built a deep, principled foundation. Mastery makes flow possible, and flow is where the best work, the clearest thinking and the most useful results come from. In practice, it means we would rather understand a problem fully than patch it quickly, and when something breaks, we fix the class of problem rather than just the instance, so it can't happen again.

2. Commitment to Mutual Growth

(… Through mentorship and kind feedback.)

Nobody reaches mastery alone. Mentorship is one of the things we care most about as a company, and feedback is how it works day to day. Everyone gives feedback to everyone, candidly and kindly, regardless of role or seniority, and everyone is comfortable receiving it. Feedback given with care is the fastest way any of us gets better, and a team where it flows freely improves faster than one where it doesn't.

This also shapes who we hire. We look for driven, hungry people, including people early in their careers, and we invest in growing them. How quickly someone learns from feedback matters more to us than where they start.

3. Have the Courage to Make Big Bets

Incremental improvements don't change the world, and we're here to change it. We encourage people to take big, bold bets on ideas that could matter a great deal, even when they might not work.

People only take real risks when they trust that the team is behind them. That trust is what our emphasis on mentorship and feedback is for: when someone takes a swing, the team helps give it structure, guidance and honest feedback along the way. When a bet works, we all win. When it doesn't, we learn from it together, and the lesson belongs to the whole team rather than to the person who took the risk.

4. Whole Humans

We are a human-centered company. We look after each other, at work and outside it. Hobbies, partners, families and lives outside work aren't merely tolerated here; they're expected.

We believe that people who are cared for do the best work of their lives, and that excellence is built across a whole life, not just the hours spent at a desk. The discipline it takes to master an instrument, a sport or a craft is the same discipline that makes someone great at their work. We'd love to hear about what you've gone deep on outside work, and we build time away from work into how we operate.

How we work

We work roughly in six-week cycles that alternate intensity with reflection. For five weeks, we work intensely and in person. The sixth week is for finishing well: polishing and wrapping up, fixing bugs, writing documentation, reflection, giving feedback and mentoring, and improving how we'll run the next cycle.

The rhythm exists because sustained intensity burns people out, while intensity followed by reflection is how both people and companies improve. It is our values built into the calendar.

What this means for hiring

Our culture is the basis for how we hire. We look for depth in something, at work or outside it; the ability to learn quickly from feedback and to give it well; courage; calm under real pressure; clear thinking; and a full life beyond work. Integrity and honesty are never traded off. Above all, we look for people who genuinely want to work this way. You can read more in How We Hire.
